Carnival Feed Back ~ Volunteers?

Hopefully by now everyone has had a chance to take a look at the Carnival Report Card results. (If not feel free to click the link and view them!)

As you can see… most of the responses were positive and the board has decided to move ahead with a carnival for next year.  If you volunteered to serve on one of the committees you will be contacted once a meeting time/date has been established.

One of the primary items of concern noted on the feedback forms were lack of volunteers.  Other items to look at include how the prizes were done, types of games, and food choices.  This post though is to focus on the volunteer issue.

It is true, we did have a lack of volunteers.  Out of over 600 students we only had about 45 parents volunteer to help.  That is less then 13% of parents being involved.  So, to keep the carnival moving forward we utilized the Brookville football players, cheerleaders, and key club members with mixed results it seems.

Each year we have actually struggled to get enough parent volunteers for the carnival, although this has been the most challenging year by far.  This problem seems to occur frequently with events and is always a challenge.  Why is that?  What do we need to do differently to help resolve encourage more volunteers?  On-line sign up?  More notice?  What suggestions do you have to help your PTO overcome this challenge?

Welcome!

Welcome to the TES PTO President’s Blog!  This blog has been created to be used as a communication tool between the PTO Board and the PTO members!

After reviewing some of the carnival report cards I realized that while we receive feedback we seldom address those who sent the feedback or respond to it.  If obvious changes do not occur anyone with feedback may feel that we didn’t listened or took into account their view point.  That of course is never the case.  But, how do people know that?

I also realized that some of the items listed on the report cards were items out of our control and that perhaps the membership needed to hear why some of the decisions were made.  And not only why but also that having an open discussion/information seeking format could help to positively reinforce the strong points while at the same time seeking out other resolutions.

Initially I was going to respond to the comments in The Buzz.  Doing that though, while accomplishing part of the goal, does not facilitate a full conversation or further discussion on the items.  Having a way for two-way communications between the PTO Board and the PTO membership is vital.  The board is wonderful about sending information out.  On some of the items we do a great job at getting feedback.  None of the formats though allow for constructive two-way communications.

So, the hope is a blog would help to facilitate that.

To answer some questions you might have…

The blog is hosted through a separate secure site from the main website.  Therefore, there will be some differences in the background and format.  We are working on those but didn’t want to delay the launch of the blog over something minor.

Comments and responses can be placed in moderation to prevent spam or other unwanted items from showing up.  At this point moderation isn’t set for items that are being posted.  If spam starts being an issue though, unfortunately, we may have to move moderation.  But, let’s see how it goes first!

When new blog posts are made they will be announced on the Facebook page.  If you would like to sign up to receive the blog by email please do so by sending an email to president@tespto.org.   The email addresses will remain only within the PTO organization!

And, while we all know this, as a standard “cautionary” note… Please remember.  This is a school associated blog, and while we want (and need) your feedback please refrain from anything racist, cursing, attacking others, etc.  Let’s keep the discussions friendly, open and moving in a productive fashion!

Please post any questions! And let’s get things started!

Talk to you soon!
